SCCA SEDIv Double National at Roebling Road - 07/3-4/2000
We don't have a full race report, but you can bet it was a hot weekend! There were 28 cars on grid. For both races, Bill Bentley in his #4 Camaro and John Finger in the #14 Mustand were ahead of Dave, who was gridded 3rd. Bruce Dewey in the IROC Camaro and Butch Kummer in C5 Corvette followed.
In Saturday's Race 1, Bentley led Start to Finish. Dave & John Finger swapped places several times, but Dave managed to take 2nd Place. Finger took 3rd. Dewey had a DNF and Kummer finished further back in the pack.
On Sunday in Race 2, it was Finger who led the whole race. It was a hard race between Dave, Bill Bentley and Bruce Dewey. Dewey ended up getting 2nd, with Bently taking 3rd and Dave finishing in 4th Place. Butch Kummer managed a 7th Place finish.
SCCA National Race at Daytona International Speedway- 05/07/2000
Dave was gridded 4th behind Bruce Dewey, Bill Bentley and Bob Borders...all in Camaros. In all 29 cars took the green flag for the race. Dewey & Bentely duked it out for 1st and 2nd until about half way through the race.
Dewey fell back to 4th, while Dave chased Bentley for the lead. With only a few laps to go, Dave passed Bentley and held the lead to the end.
A 1st place O/A finish at Daytona! Bentley, Rankin and Dewey followed.
SCCA Tom Nehl Classic XXII - 03/12/2000
Dave started on Pole and lead start to finish. David Seuss in another Olds followed in 2nd place. We didn't get any pictures.
SCCA SARRC Invitational Challenge at Roebling Road - 09/27/1998
Tropic Zone Racing came into this event in first place for the SARRC championship. The 2nd place car in championship points did not enter the race. Our other competition was Ray Montalvo, Tim Lyons' #14 Mustang, Sam Henderson in the #5 IROC Camaro and Ed Stackpole in a Mustang.
There were only 20 cars on the grid. First was Art Armellini in an ASR Shelby Can Am car, followed by Dave, Henderson, Stackpole & Lyons. Ray Montalvo qualified but didn't make the race.
Armellini finished 1st over all and in the ASR class. Next the GT-1 cars...Sam Henderson and Dave had a close and hard race for 2nd O/A and 1st in GT-1. Dave did not need 1st place to win the championship and settled for 2nd in class (3rd O/A) to secure the SARRC championship. Tim Lyons finished 4th O/A. Stackpole fell out of the race after 7 laps.
Our first season in the Oldsmobile and we took the SEDiv SARRC championship!
SCCA SCR Region Low Country SARRC at Roebling Road - 08/15-16/1998
This is one weekend that did not go as well as we would have liked it to. It started out fine, hot, but everything was going well. Saturday night, after practice and qualifying the SC region put on a great low country boil!
We qualified on the pole with Sam Hendrson, Ray Montalvo, Tim Lyons and Richard Bridgette behind us. There were 6 GT-1 cars and a total of 16 starters for the race.
Dave led the first half of the race with Henderson in hot pursuit. Henderson got around Dave and the roles were reversed. With two laps to go, as they were going hard into Turn 1, a lapped car suddenly changed direction and crossed the track in front of them. Both Henderson and Dave spun to avoid it.
Henderson collected his car and went on for the win. Dave had damage and came into the pits and finished two laps down in 5th Place.
SCCA NCR Region Double SARRC at Roebling Road - 05/9-10/1998
Mother's Day weekend found up back at Roebling Road for the NC Region double SAARC races. Our son, Mark, and his wife, Janet, came to crew for us.
There were only 3 GT-1 cars for the weekend - Our Olds, Tim Lyon's Mustang and Tom Coleman in his Riley/Scott Trans Am Camaro. There were 16 cars total in our group. Dave's Pole setting qualifing time was 2 seconds better than the other two GT-1 cars who were gridded 2nd and 3rd.
Dave led Race 1 from the Pole for the win. Coleman ran hard, but with his best lap time 2 seconds slower finished 2nd. Lyons finished 3rd in GT-1 and 5th O/A.
Tom Coleman must have been inspired because he out qualified Dave for the Pole position for Race 2. Tim Lyons did not make the start so the race was between Dave and Coleman. On the start, Dave went deep into Turn 1 and took Coleman on the inside.
Coleman was all over the rear of the Olds. The Olds had fantastic brakes and on lap 5, going into Turn 4, Coleman tried to follow Dave in deep and went off track, which was the end of his race. Dave motored home for another First Place finish. It was a fun weekend with great racing.
Jim Stark Memorial SARRC at Roebling Road- 04/18-19/1998
It was nice weather for a race, in the 70's and overcast, but no rain. The field for the race only held 9 cars, 4 in GT-1. Karl Keck in his Corvette, Ray Montalvo in a Camaro and Charlie Mosley in another Corvette, were our competition.
Dave was on Pole followed by Keck & Mosley with Montalvo back in the 6th grid spot. At the Green flag, Karl led into Turn 1 and for another lap, but then Dave got around him for the lead. A few laps later, Montalvo passed Keck for 2nd place. The race finished in that order, Dave, Montalvo and Keck.
It was good clean racing and a fun weekend. It is always fun when you win!
Our first race in the Olds - Moroso - 03/28-29/1998
This was our first time taking the Olds to the track since we bought it. We don't have a full race report.
I do remember that we came to the track with the wrong gear and put in a lower one after running the test day.
For Saturday's race, we started 5th on the grid behind Gary Smith (#3 blue Camaro), Karl Keck (#4 yellow Corvette), Bob Mack (SP #12 Porsche) and John Leavy (#18 Yellow Camaro). Since this was Dave's first race in the car, instead off pushing too hard, he concentrated on learning the car. Our finishing position on Saturday was 2nd in class & 4th O/A.
On Sunday, we started 4th on the grid behind Leavy, Smith and Keck. We finished 3rd in class and O/A. The car ran great and we think the car could have been pushed harder, but overall it was a great weekend.
