SCCA Bob McCall Memorial SARRC Race Report...
Southeast Division South Atlantic Road Racing Championship – SARRC
Roebling Road Raceway - SARRC race - November 20, 2004
The hot Florida summer has turned into Fall and we had perfect weather for the SARRC race at Roebling Road Raceway. After our last attempt to make it to the track in July, was aborted after we blew a tire on the truck, we were very happy to have a weekend that was trouble free.
We drove up to the track on Friday, arriving around noon and found a great spot near to the grid and the concession stand. After we unloaded and bought some fuel, we got the car teched. Then with some time before registration would open, we headed over to the 'Chateau' Econo, checked in and then went for a bite to eat. After eating, we headed back to the track to register. Michael Hooten, one of our crew, caught up with us there. Saturday was going to be a busy day, so we turned in early.
Saturday would include a 10 minute Practice session, a 20 minute Qualifying session and a 14 lap Race. Sunday would be an ECR event, which we do not compete in, so we would be returning home on Saturday also. We were Group Three and our Practice session would be combined with Group Four, which included classes such as Spec Racers, SSC, EP, HP ( small bore cars). The difference in speed would make the session tense for everyone.
We headed out to the track around 7:00 am and the rest of the crew, our son, Mark, and Casey Miller arrived around 8:00 am. The car was ready, so all we had to do, was warm up the motor and check tire pressures. We were on track around 9:00 am. The car worked great! Dave made a trip to pit lane to have us check for damage to the car after a Spec Racer came over on him in Turn Two. There was some paint on the left rear wheel and quarter panel, but no damage.
Back in the paddock, the crew went to work getting the car ready for 10:15 Qualifying session. The car was running good and after a checking it over and bleeding the brakes, we took it to the grid early to get a good starting spot. Our session went without any incidents and Dave was able to post a best lap of 1:10.578 for the Pole position.
The event did not draw a lot of cars. Thanksgiving weekend was the Turkey Trot in Sebring and most of the south Florida cars would run that race instead of coming to Roebling. There were not any other GT-1 cars, but a group of Monte Carlos (SPO Class) showed up and would be running with us. Our race was scheduled for after lunch.
Around 2:00 pm we took the car up to the False Grid. The weather was around 75° and sunny. The race was pretty uneventful. Wayne Cabaniss, in an SPO Corvette, gave Dave a good run down the front straight, but Dave went into Turn One first. After that, the Olds pulled out a comfortable lead, lapping everyone except Wayne, who finished 2nd. About half of the field was lapped twice. It was a nice victory!
We enjoyed seeing our racing friends such as Dainton Brooks, Judy Corbitt and everyone who stopped by our trailer to chat.
The crew helped pack us up and we headed home. We made it home around 7:30 pm and enjoyed a nice pizza, relaxing on the couch. Another great race weekend to reminisce over.
Casey took some video shots, picking up the car about half way down the front straight, going into Turn One and some of Turn Three. Thanks, Casey! That clip can be found on our Video Page.
